About Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common infection caused by an imbalance in the normal bacteria of the vagina. The vagina naturally hosts various bacteria, but if the levels of certain bacteria rise or fall, this can disrupt the balance and lead to infections like BV.

BV affects around 23-29% of women of reproductive age globally, particularly those aged 18 to 50 who are sexually active. While BV is not classified as a sexually transmitted infection (STI), sexual activity is the main risk factor.

Common symptoms of bacterial vaginosis (BV) include:

  • Unusual vaginal discharge
  • A strong, fishy-smelling discharge
  • Discharge that changes in color or consistency
  • A burning sensation when urinating
  • Increased vaginal discharge during sex or menstruation

Some women with BV may have no symptoms at all.

While BV is not classified as a sexually transmitted infection (STI), sexual activity can trigger it. For example, BV can be passed between women through sexual contact or sharing sex toys. Additionally, having BV increases the likelihood of contracting an STI, as the infection makes the vagina less acidic, weakening its natural defense against infections.

Because bacterial vaginosis (BV) shares symptoms with other infections, it can be easily confused with conditions like thrush or sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Here’s how BV compares to these common issues:

BV vs Thrush

Thrush is a yeast infection caused by the growth of the Candida fungus. Though it’s often confused with bacterial vaginosis, they are different in terms of causes and symptoms.

Bacterial VaginosisThrush
Cause: Imbalance in vaginal bacteriaCause: Overgrowth of the Candida fungus
Symptoms:Symptoms:
- Watery, thin, or grey discharge- Thick, white discharge resembling cottage cheese
- Strong, fishy-smelling discharge- Soreness, stinging, or burning during urination
- Increased discharge during sex or menstruation- Itching around the vulva or vagina

BV vs STIs

BV can mimic symptoms of some STIs, but it doesn’t typically cause pain, irritation, or itching in or around the vagina. However, BV does increase the risk of contracting an STI. This is because BV reduces the natural acidity of the vagina, which weakens its defense against harmful bacteria and infections, including STIs.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) occurs when the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina is disrupted. This leads to a decrease in Lactobacillus, the most common type of healthy bacteria, and an increase in other types of bacteria.

While BV is more common in sexually active individuals, several factors can increase the risk of developing it, including:

  • Changing sexual partners
  • Having multiple sexual partners
  • Smoking
  • Douching
  • Using scented soaps or vaginal washes
  • Using vaginal deodorants
  • Adding antiseptic liquids to the bath
  • Oral sex
  • Washing underwear with strong detergents
  • Unprotected sex (without condoms)
  • Using an intrauterine device (IUD) for contraception, such as the coil

he standard treatment for bacterial vaginosis (BV) involves antibiotics or antiseptic treatments, which come in several forms:

  • Oral tablets
  • Gels
  • Creams
  • Vaginal tablets (pessaries)

At Superdrug Online Doctor, we offer the following BV treatments:

  • Metronidazole tablets: Oral antibiotics available as a 1-day or 7-day course.
  • Zidoval: A metronidazole-based antibiotic gel applied directly inside the vagina.
  • Dalacin Cream 2%: A clindamycin-based antibiotic cream applied inside the vagina.
  • Fluomizin: Vaginal tablets containing dequalinium chloride, inserted nightly for 6 days. It is as effective as metronidazole, the first-line treatment for BV.

o help prevent bacterial vaginosis (BV) or alleviate symptoms, consider these steps:

  • Wash your genitals with plain, unscented soap and water.
  • Opt for showers instead of baths.
  • Avoid perfumed soaps, shower gels, shampoos, and bubble baths near your vagina.
  • Use mild detergents to wash your underwear.
  • Quit smoking.
  • Change tampons, pads, and liners regularly.
  • Use condoms during sexual activity.
  • Reduce stress levels.
  • Consider using hormonal contraception rather than an IUD.
