Product details
Mounjaro is an injectable weight loss medication containing the active ingredient tirzepatide. It works by activating two receptors (GLP-1 and GIP), which help increase hormone levels in the body, making you feel fuller for longer after meals.
Taken once a week, alongside a healthy diet and exercise, Mounjaro has been shown to help people lose around 22.5% of their initial body weight by week 72, at a maximum dose of 15 mg.
Eligibility for Mounjaro for weight loss requires a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or higher (obese), or at least 27 kg/m² (overweight) with a risk factor or health condition related to weight.

About Mounjaro
What is Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is a prescription-only weight loss injection containing the active ingredient tirzepatide. It works by activating two receptors, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), which help regulate your appetite. This makes you feel fuller for longer and less hungry, facilitating weight loss.
Mounjaro is injected once a week under the skin, either in the thigh, abdomen, or upper arm. Your doctor will start you on a low dose, gradually increasing it every 4 weeks until the maintenance dose is reached.
How does Mounjaro work?
Tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Mounjaro, mimics the effects of GLP-1 and GIP, two hormones released by your gut after eating. It works by:
- Reducing food intake
- Making you feel fuller for longer
- Slowing down the passage of food through your stomach
Mounjaro also helps people with type 2 diabetes manage high blood sugar by stimulating insulin release from the pancreas.
How long does Mounjaro take to work?
Mounjaro starts to work within a few hours of your first injection, but it may take several weeks to notice its full effects. The dosage will gradually increase to minimize side effects.
If you haven’t lost at least 5% of your initial body weight after 6 months, your doctor may recommend stopping the treatment, as it may not be effective for you.
How effective is Mounjaro?
Clinical trials show that Mounjaro helps people lose up to 22.5% of their initial body weight within 72 weeks, when using the highest maintenance dose of 15mg per week. It works best when combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise.
How do I use a Mounjaro pen?
The Mounjaro KwikPen is a disposable, pre-filled injection pen that contains 4 doses (one for each week). After using all doses, you dispose of the pen safely. You can inject Mounjaro yourself or have someone trained to help you.
Steps to prepare and inject Mounjaro:
Prepare the pen:
- Wash your hands thoroughly.
- Inspect the pen and make sure it is undamaged, the medication is clear and not expired.
- Attach a new needle and remove the inner and outer needle shields.
- Prime the pen by turning the dose knob until 2 clicks are heard, then expel a small amount of medication to remove air bubbles.
Inject Mounjaro:
- Choose your injection site: thigh, abdomen, or upper arm.
- Turn the dose knob until the -1 icon appears in the dose window.
- Insert the needle into your skin and press the dose knob to inject.
- Hold the dose knob for 5 seconds after injection to ensure the full dose is administered.
After injection:
- If there’s blood at the injection site, press gently with gauze or a cotton ball.
- Safely dispose of the needle and cap the pen.
Where to inject Mounjaro:
- The injection can be done in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Rotate the site weekly to prevent bruising or irritation.
- Maintain at least 5 cm between the navel and previous injection sites in the abdomen.
By following these steps, you can effectively use Mounjaro to support your weight loss goals.
