About Tostran Gel

Tostran Gel is a testosterone replacement therapy designed for adult men to address various health issues linked to low testosterone (male hypogonadism). These include:

  • Fatigue
  • Depressive moods
  • Low sex drive
  • Infertility
  • Impotence
  • Bone loss due to low testosterone levels

What is a Tostran Gel pump? Tostran Gel is available in a canister with a pump mechanism. Each press of the pump delivers 0.5 grams of gel (containing 10mg of testosterone). The canister contains 60 grams of gel. Before using the pump for the first time, ensure it is primed according to the instructions. Your doctor will provide specific instructions on how many pumps to use as part of your treatment plan. Always follow your doctor's instructions for use.

What are Testogel sachets? Testogel sachets are another form of testosterone replacement therapy, applied as a gel to the skin. Once applied, the testosterone in the gel is absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream. These sachets are primarily used by adult men to treat the symptoms caused by low testosterone levels.

Tostran Gel works by being absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream, helping to restore and maintain normal testosterone levels in your body.

What type of medication is it? Tostran Gel is a form of testosterone replacement therapy, which replaces testosterone, a hormone your body may not be able to produce enough of on its own.

What are the active ingredients? The active ingredient in Tostran Gel is testosterone, a type of androgen.

What causes low testosterone, and how does Tostran Gel treat it? Testosterone levels naturally decline as you age, starting gradually in your 30s or 40s. However, several factors can cause low testosterone, including:

  • Testicular infection or injury
  • Chemotherapy for cancer
  • Medications like opioids, steroids, and hormones used to treat prostate cancer
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Kallman syndrome

Symptoms of low testosterone include:

  • Low sex drive
  • Depressed mood
  • Erectile dysfunction (ED)
  • Irritability and moodiness
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty with memory and concentration

Tostran Gel helps boost testosterone levels, which may alleviate these symptoms.

Tostran Gel dosage The usual starting dose of Tostran Gel is 3g per day (containing 60mg of testosterone). Your doctor may adjust this dose, but the daily dose should not exceed 4g (80mg of testosterone).

Always check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're unsure about the correct dosage.

How long does it take for Tostran Gel to work? Tostran Gel typically starts working immediately, with noticeable effects often within the first few weeks. If you don’t see improvements after 3-6 months, consult your doctor for a possible adjustment to your dose or a different testosterone replacement therapy.

How effective is Tostran Gel? Studies show that testosterone replacement therapy can improve muscle mass, bone strength, erectile dysfunction, and overall metabolic health in patients with testosterone deficiency.

How to Use Tostran Gel

  1. Preparation: Wash your hands with soap and water before applying the gel. Ensure your skin is clean, dry, and unbroken.

  2. Where to Apply Tostran Gel: Tostran Gel should be applied to the abdomen (a 10x30 cm area) or split between both inner thighs. It is recommended to alternate between the inner thighs and abdomen each day.

Avoid applying the gel to other parts of your body, especially the genital area. If you're uncertain about where to apply it, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

  1. Frequency: Tostran Gel should be applied once daily, at the same time each morning. Setting an alarm may help you remember. If you miss a dose, do not double up on the next application.

  2. Duration of Use: Tostran Gel should be used long-term, as directed by your doctor. If you notice no improvement, consult your doctor to potentially adjust your dose or switch to another form of testosterone replacement therapy.

  3. Timing Before Showering: If you plan to shower or bathe, do so before applying Tostran Gel. Alternatively, wait at least 2 hours after applying the gel to allow it to fully absorb into your skin before getting wet.

Can Women Use Tostran Gel?
Tostran Gel is currently prescribed only to men. Although testosterone gel can be prescribed for some women experiencing menopausal symptoms, we do not prescribe Tostran Gel to women.

Tostran Gel and Bodybuilding
While some bodybuilders use Tostran Gel to boost testosterone and increase muscle mass, we do not recommend or prescribe Tostran Gel for this purpose. It is only prescribed to individuals with low testosterone levels who are already established on testosterone replacement therapy.

Contraindications
Tostran Gel must only be used if hypogonadism (low testosterone) has been confirmed by a doctor and further tests have indicated it is safe. It has not been tested in males under 18, and there is limited research on its use in men over 65. Do not use Tostran Gel if you:

  • Are allergic to testosterone
  • Have or suspect you have breast or prostate cancer

In these cases, notify your doctor. A check-up is required before starting Tostran Gel and periodically during treatment (usually once or twice a year).
Additionally, do not use Tostran Gel if you have:

  • Severe liver, heart, or kidney disease (can cause complications like water retention and heart failure)
  • High blood pressure (treatment may raise blood pressure)
  • Swollen feet and hands
  • Chronic lung disease (treatment may worsen sleep apnoea)
  • Diabetes (treatment may affect insulin response)
  • Migraines or epilepsy (conditions may worsen with treatment)
  • A raised PSA (prostate-specific antigen) or any urinary symptoms (treatment may accelerate prostate cancer or benign prostate enlargement)
  • Plans to have children in the future (treatment may suppress sperm production)

Medicines That Interact with Tostran Gel
Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or plan to take any of the following medications while using Tostran Gel:

  • Corticosteroids
  • Anticoagulants

Tostran Gel vs. Testogel
In addition to Tostran Gel, we also offer Testogel 50mg/5g sachets to help boost testosterone levels. If you're interested in testing your testosterone levels without visiting your GP, we also provide a convenient testosterone test kit. This simple pin-prick blood test can be done at home and sent to our partner lab for analysis.

Testogel vs. Tostran Gel
Both Testogel and Tostran Gel are used for testosterone replacement therapy, but they have some key differences:

  • Testogel: Comes in sachets, with the recommended dose being 5g of gel (50mg of testosterone) applied once daily to the arms, shoulders, or stomach.
  • Tostran Gel: Comes in a pump, with the recommended dose being 3g of gel (60mg of testosterone) applied once daily to the abdomen or inner thighs.

Both gels have side effects and contraindications. If you're unsure which gel is right for you, it's important to consult with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.

What is a Tostran Gel pump?

Tostran Gel is supplied in a canister with a pumping mechanism called a ‘Tostran Gel pump’. This is used to deliver one half-gram of gel (10mg of testosterone) each time the pump is pushed right down. Each canister of Tostran contains 60 grams of gel. Before using the pump for the first time, make sure it is ready for use and ‘primed’ as outlined in the instructions. Your doctor will have informed you how many ‘pumps’ of Tostran Gel you need as part of your treatment plan. You should always use Tostran Gel as prescribed by your doctor.
